Bishop Herbert Clarke Sr.

The Honorable Bishop Herbert Clarke, 93, one of the eldest Bishops in our community, transitioned into Glory, October 14, 2016. Bishop Herbert Clarke was affectionately known by many as Daddy Clarke. His Jamaican accent could be heard proclaiming the Gospel on KXEN 1010 Radio station, KNLC Chanel 24, and Access Chanel in Springfield, IL. He personified excellent character and obedience to the mighty call of God. He was a prophet chosen, led, ordained and anointed by God to preach the word of God in and out of Season. His constant conversation was “The Lord is Soon to Come. I’m a Soul Man, I’ll eat your steak and I’ll still tell you the truth.” Many people loved Bishop because of his kind heart. He was easy to entreat and given to hospitality. He often spoke about how humble he was to be chosen of God. In 1962, Bishop Herbert Clarke and his family moved from Jamaica, West Indies to Chattanooga, Tennessee. It was there in 1968 that he received his American citizenship, and began to pastor The Church of God in Chattanooga, TN. In January 1970, God led them to E. St Louis, IL. to Pastor Full Gospel Missionary Temple, which later became Full Gospel Miracle Temple. Bishop Clarke became the Founder, Pastor and Overseer. He dedicated his life to prayer, fasting and preaching the word of God. While in the vestibule, walking towards the sanctuary, the voice of God whispered to him, “It is yours, I give it to you.” God confirmed that this was the place he would establish his ministry. Bishop Clarke preached his first message at Full Gospel Missionary Temple on January 20, 1970. The title was “God Is Able,” taken from Ephesians 3:13-29. His first offering was 45.00, which he used to return to Tennessee. On May 15, 1970, he moved back to East St. Louis, IL. and on June 12, 1970 he moved his family to E. St. Louis and began his might work. Bishop has proclaimed the Gospel even in his sickness. His desire was to be a servant of God. The bishop left this message to the church; Well done my child, my Lord will say. With courage bold you’ve stood for the right. Like Paul of Old, you’ve fought a good fight and now a crown of life you have won. Well done, he’ll say that day, when I enter the gates of glory land. I’m at home with Jesus, no more tears or sorrows beloved. I will meet you in the morning by the bright riverside.
