Dorothy Dean Slaughter

Mrs. Dorothy Dean Smith-Slaughter was born January 9, 1938 in the City of Florence, and the state of Alabama. Dorothy fondly called “Marcie” was the oldest of seven children, born to the union of Nathan and Delores Smith. Her husband, Robert Slaughter, daughter, Robin Slaughter-Goliday, parents, Nathan and Delores Smith, sisters Mattie Lockett, Lois Ann Byrd, Nancy Jones, Mary Smith Brown and brother, William Smith Sr. preceded her in death. Dorothy attended Slater School in Florence, Alabama until she was nine years old and her family moved to Miami, Florida. She joined Mt. Zion Baptists Church under the leadership of Rev. J.R. Evans. Dorothy came to East St Louis in 1948. She entered the Public Schools here and finished her education. Dorothy met and married Mr. Robert G. Slaughter, December 11, 1955 and to this union, four daughters were born. Dorothy joined Mt. Sinai Baptist Church October 28, 1973 under the leadership of Rev. R.L. White. The church is now under the leadership of Rev. Herman L. Watson, Sr. She joined the Booster Choir and Health Unit. She also joined the Sanctuary Choir. The sorrow brought by the death of Dorothy on April 16, 2017 cast a shadow over loved ones, and dear friends. Left to cherish her memories are one brother, Kenneth Smith; four children, daughters Jacqueline Slaughter, Cynthia Slaughter and Nancy Slaughter and one son, Terrell Slaughter, one son-in-law, Dwight Goliday, Sr. Five grandchildren: Tiffanee Slaughter, Mario (Regina) Slaughter, Dwight Goliday, Jr., Chelsea (Jalen) Green and Neisha Johnson; five great grandchildren, Tyler Renee Daniels, Hasani Eskridge II, Josiah Slaughter, Jaya Green, and Gabriel Slaughter. Brothers-in-law, Thomas Coleman, Sr., Kerry Slaughter, Dennis Slaughter, sisters-in-law, Edwina Slaughter-Long, Jocelyn Slaughter-Gregory and Robbie Slaughter; special cousin, Danella Scott, and a host of nieces, nephews and a special grandson, Hasani Eskridge, Sr., and other family and friends.
