Walter Sally

Walter Sally was born to the late Marcellus Alexander and Hattie Ree Sally on December 16, 1952 in Grenada, Mississippi. He was the eldest son of his mother’s fifteen children. His father, mother, four brothers, and beloved older sister preceded him in death. Walter accepted Christ at a young age as he attended First New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Grenada, Mississippi. He and his older sister both were choir members. He received all his formal education in the Grenada County public school system. He is remembered for playing the tuba when he was in high school. He graduated from high school in 1970. Upon graduating high school, he worked for the local hosiery factory for a few months, he realized this is not what he wanted to do. He was sent to Memphis, TN by his mother to attend a trade school. Walter ended up in Chicago, Illinois in the mid 1970’s. He was married twice. To his first union were born two boys. His second marriage produced his only daughter. Walter held many jobs while living in Chicago. He is most remembered for working in the steel foundries. He worked at Francis and Nygren Steel Mill and Sheffield Steel. He was a grinder. After leaving the steel foundries, Walter would often work as a day laborer remodeling houses for many throughout Chicago to St. Louis and on to Grenada. He leaves behind to cherish his memories his three children, Walter R. Eugene Sally, Ocala, FL; Ariel S Sally, Brian, TX; and Peggan Sally, Chicago, IL, six brothers, Albert (Mary), Washington Park, IL, Frederick, Aurora, IL, Gregory, Chicago, IL, Lawrence, Washington Park, IL, Martin(Kelly), Huntsville, AL, John (Chandra), Disputanta, VA, three sisters Henrietta, Conneaut, OH, Geneva Morris, Chicago, IL and Marie Sally, Belleville, IL. His humbled and beloved personality will be greatly missed by a host of 28 nieces and nephews, 53 great nieces and nephews and 2 great great nephews and a special cousin, Mary Crowder who has helped and labored with his care giving during the last two years of his life.
